Australian artist Patricia Piccinini (born in Sierra Leone) has a show, called "Hug," of recent work on now at Seattle's Frye Art Museum through January 6th.

The work in the show showcases the artist's themes of genetic intervention and manipulation of humans and animals. Ms. Piccinini works in the hyper-realist mode creating sculptures (somewhat in the vein of Ron Mueck) in which transformed humans and animals interact in frequently uncomfortable ways.

You don't come away from Piccinini's work thinking the world is a simple, rosy-hued place. Instead, the issues she raises remind us that it's a complex, deeply interconnected one.
