We think one of the best games ever developed for the web is called Samorost, from the Czech Republic's Amanita Design team. It's the second version of the game and we can't say that playing (either #1 or #2) is the biggest challenge out there. But we'd be interested to read your comments if you've ever come across one that is more thoroughly charming.
The basic premise is that while a little space gnome, our hero, is snoozing at home on his space rock, aliens arrive and bundle off his pooch. The job is to figure out how to get them back home. No words are spoken, nor are any needed. Your mouse, a little intuition, and some trial and error are the keys to a happy ending.
What has made the game such a cult favorite is the combination of first-rate graphics, music, and characters. And it's one online game that won't give you a twinge of guilt for the time investment when it's over. Space Gnomes 1, Bad Guys 0. Yay!
