stuff to buy stuff to do stuff to see

Next month, the New York public radio station WFUV will pop the cork for their program The Big Broadcast, which celebrates 35 years on the air. Hosted by Rich Conaty, it's on Sundays from 8pm to midnight.

The show's popularity stems from its narrow focus: jazz and pop songs from the 1920s and 30s. You'll be reminded again and again of the extraordinary explosion of great songwriting in those decades, hearing both familiar tunes and more obscure ones. That makes the show both an education and a pleasure.

You don't have to be in the New York area to hear WFUV. They have live streaming and the two recent shows archived here. Finally, Mr. Conaty has assembled some helpful links for those interested in this music.

Congratulations to Rich Conaty. I began listening to his show by mistake (and have come to hear the cool-ness of the very old music he plays. WFUV is so wise to open its audience's ears to older and outside the usual kinds of music.

I listen to Rich Conaty online every week. He is quite a character -- almost as fascinating as the music he plays. A wonderful show. If you prefer a more scholarly approach to old-time popular music, try Hot Jazz Saturday Night, also heard online.
