stuff to buy stuff to do stuff to see

From this mid-point vantage, the Broadway season has been especially strong -- if you're a playgoer. For musical lovers, not so much. In any case, no theater season on the Great White Way is complete without revivals; right on cue, they're due next.

Produced by the Manhattan Theater Club, William Inge's Come Back, Little Sheba makes a return (the first Broadway revival since the 1950 original) starring the great actress (and "Law & Order" stalwart) S. Epatha Merkerson and Kevin Anderson.

If the blood and gloom of Sweeney Todd is keeping you off Sondheim, check in on the revival of Sunday in the Park with George, which contains what is arguably his most beautiful score. This one is a transfer from London, via the Roundabout Theatre Company, of the Menier Chocolate Factory's version starring Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell. The production won an Olivier as did its two stars.

I'm thrilled to learn that one of my favorite musicals of all time is being revived! To me, the king of musical theatre is Sondheim, with his insightful plots, characters with depth, and complex, challenging scores. I hope there is a tour!
