Here's a dinner party to remember.

Dinner at Mr. Jefferson's: Three Men, Five Great Wines, and the Evening that Changed America, by Charles Cerami, tells the story of a dinner that took place chez Jefferson, with James Madison and Alexander Hamilton. Along with the starry guest list and top-flight wines, the three men hammered out an agreement that essentially shored up the young country's finances, with the intention of making the dollar "as good as gold."

'The meal that saved the republic' is how it's described -- and if that sounds hyperbolic, reading the book makes it sound much less so.
