It's the beehive hairdo that strikes you first: singer Mari Wilson's signature look that tells you something about the kind of material she sings.
She first surfaced in the '80s, a refreshing alternative to that decade's beat. She sang retro-poppy, girl group kind of tunes with a hat tip to Dusty Springfield. She wasn't winking at us, not exactly. Instead, she said this kind of cotton candy with the occasional jazz inflection was good, too. And twenty years later, she's still at it, though far better known in her native England than stateside.
Have a listen to her Platinum Collection and she may give your day a lift higher than any beehive.
