Beginning previews next week on Broadway is Passing Strange. It's the new musical by Stew, the California singer-songwriter who, with partner Heidi Rodewald, created the Afro-baroque sound which has earned them a devoted following.
The show is a story of a young black musician and his journey from South Central L.A. into adulthood. It debuted last year at the Public Theater, where it earned rave reviews, leading to this transfer to the Belasco. If you're looking for a conventional musical, this one won't sing to you. But if you're looking for something offbeat, this one just might.
